Nearly every other diver on my boat had some sort of photography rig. And not just simple lexan underwater cases, but imposing contraptions with powerful strobes and sturdy handles. I was a little bit intimidated gripping a small plastic mass.

But once I got underwater and watched many of the divers struggling with their rigs, catching protuberances on errant kelp fronds, I felt a little better about wielding this simple Canon setup. As a point-and-shoot (and shoot and shoot) piece of equipment, the whole rig is simple, capable, durable, and—especially compared to similar underwater gear of just a couple years back—cheap enough that it won’t be a tragedy when it gets lost at sea. The street price of the HF20 (an AVCHD camcorder with 32GB of flash memory) is $800; the WP-V1 can be found for around $400.

That second go-round thankfully only affects only a “small number” of D5000 customers in Europe, who were apparently unfortunate enough to not have their cameras treated with a new “enhanced procedure” that’s designed to provide an additional preventative measure. From the sound of it, those affected should have already heard directly from Nikon, and will apparently have to only wait a “short time” to get their camera repaired, hopefully for the last time.

<img src="http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/images/leica_s2.gif" width="120" height="100" hspace="8" align="right"">Leica has said its S2 autofocus medium format DSLR will be available in October for a recommended selling price of £15,996 (UK). The camera is built around a 37.5 megapixel 30×45mm sensor (56% larger than ‘full frame’), that puts it squarely into the apparently troubled medium format sector. Customers willing to spend an extra £3,096 will receive an S2-P featuring a sapphire glass monitor screen and ‘Platinum Service’ support package. The company has also revealed the prices of the first four S-series lenses, announced alongside the camera at the Photokina 2008 exhibition in Germany.
